Bans on Smoking in Public Areas - 1476 Words

Imagine all of the people that die in accidents such as car crashes, fires, falls, and poisoning each year. If you add all of these together and then multiply that number by four, you get the number of people that die because of smoking each year! Smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the U.S. Each year more than 480,000 people die because of smoking. This is just one of the many reasons why I believe that cigarette smoking should be banned in public areas. I will argue this point in three ways. First, I will argue that the health effects of smoking are so harmful that cigarettes should not be allowed in public areas. Next, I will argue that the negative effects go beyond just health, but to the money of people affected by†¦show more content†¦Cigarettes can do just as much damage if not more than a car crash can. Not only is smoking dangerous to the health and safety of people, but to the money of people as well. The habit of smoking takes huge amounts of mon ey from smokers. The amount of money that smoking takes away from the smoker is enough to destroy their lives. It also takes money from businesses, which is something many business owners dont understand. These are just a few more reasons why the smoking of cigarettes should be banned in public areas. The cost of cigarettes are much much bigger than one would expect. According to The Price of Smoking the private costs of smoking for the average person that starts smoking at age 24 and lives to age 100 ends up being about 141,181 dollars. This is the average cost between the total private cost for women and the total private cost for men. The cost for women is about 86,236 dollars and about 182,860 dollars for men. With this amount of money you could buy a new home or several new cars. A lot of times the smoker will also ask for money from friends or family. According to The Smoking Book, the costs that are imposed on the spouse of the smoker (again if they begin at age 24 and live t o age 100) average at about 23,407 dollars. This is also the average price between women and men. The cost for women is about 15,985 dollars and about 29,037 dollars for men.
